I am not supposed to have caffeine, on doctor's recommendations.
I have arthritis and caffeine is not recommended.
I have a history of fybromyalgia, although currently under control, and caffeine is not recommended.
I am a woman of a certain age, and caffeine is not recommended.

However, I love my coffee and love the Tassimo Columbian coffee pods.

So, in an effort to control my intake I limit myself to a maximum of 2 Columbian coffees each day, one at breakfast and one after dinner, as long as it isn't later then 7pm.
Or that was the case until now.
At work our Crawley office has moved to smaller premises and so we have inherited an amount of furniture, copiers and other office equipment that they either no longer use or want.
Among the items is a coffee maker, not the same as ours, but similar AND it takes the same Tassimo pods.
It was decided we would have it in the office for when the MD or General Manager have visitors, we can make them a really nice cuppa. The machine is in our office. It sits on the desk next to me.
As no-one else had tried the pods they were guided by me and so we now have a stock of Columbian pods at work - for guests.
Except I now have my boss, a constant tea-drinker at work, converted to the pods. She likes to have a frothy coffee at 3pm in the afternoon. And no-one could expect me to make coffees for my boss and my colleague......and not have one myself, now could they.
So, my caffeine intake is now up to 3 cups a day. I need to keep an eye on the effect on my sleep and my health but it would take more will power than I have to make frothy coffees for everyone else and then have a standard de-caff.

How can a simple task be so complicated?
I am generally quite capable at working out how to do basic tasks and can pick up new tasks relatively quickly but every now and then one gets you where no matter how hard you try - it just doesn't happen.
Like refilling a franking machine.
My boss decided she would show me how to do it so that she no longers needs to bother about it. I spend most of the postage anyway by the volume of post I send out so I may as well be responsible for making sure there's always money in the machine.
Franking machines are not an unknown item to me so how hard could it be.

Go Ahead Please!
A couple of days ago I received a phone call at work which was a totally new experience for me. The operator asked me if I could take a text call and had I taken such a call previously. She explained that the caller may either be deaf or have difficulties speaking.
Yes, I can take the call and No, I've never taken one before. She explained to me that the person calling was using a relay service by which they typed the message and the operator relayed that message to me. I would then tell her my reply and she would type it back to the caller and so on. To signify that I had finished each part of my reply and to indicate to the caller that it was their turn to respond I needed to say 'Go Ahead'. Obviously the modern equivalent of 'Over & Out'.
It was important that I spoke my replies as if I was talking direct to the caller, as the operator would type exactly what I said, but it was initially difficult not to answer the operator and refer to the caller in the 3rd person. But, I soon got the hang of it and the conversation started.
There were a few complications in that the caller was having trouble with their text phone and we got cut off a couple of times, and there was an issue with our product that had not been resolved but, I was able to help sort out for a fitter to call to see them the following day and to hold the conversation as if speaking to them direct.

Challenges of a new job.
I am very concious in my new role, of not over stepping the mark. I have worked at a senior level previous to my time in Spain. I had responsibility for others, for systems, for making sure we had backups of data and in a crisis, I had responsibility for analysing the options and deciding which route to choose.
When I returned to work I wanted to lose all of that responsibility. I wanted a job where I went to work, did my job, enjoyed working with my colleagues and switched off when I came home at night. Where my weekends were my own and the 'life-work' balance that everyone talks of, and which I am very aware of, was in balance.
And so, to my current job. I love my job. I'm doing work I've always enjoyed and doesn't tax my brain too much. I have a good boss who is on the same wave length as me. I am in an industry that produces something which, after years in a service environment, I find enjoyable. The initial few weeks were a little stressful due to issues with my work colleague but she is no longer working there and her possible replacement seems fine. It was a challenging few weeks but we're past them now. It didn't help that the day after the agency had been asked to let her know she wasn't wanted back, she was sat at her desk when I got in to the office. The agency hadn't got around to phoning her to let her know her services were no longer required. How bad is that?
This is the same agency that I'm in talks with over holiday pay. They have a holiday year running from 6th April to 5th April - it follows the tax year dates. They have a rule that all holiday has to be taken by the 5th April, no carry forward - nothing strange in that. They also have a rule that says you have to work a month before you can take any holiday - again, nothing unusual in that, you need to accrue the holiday before you can take them but, there is always one that doesn't fit the rules - and it's me!
I started on the 3rd March, so my first month with them to accrue holiday is 6th March to 5th April. So I then somehow have to take the holiday accrued also by the 5th April. And, to make it even more difficult the 5th April fell on a Tuesday and my day off is Monday. I'm having trouble making the agency see that their rules mean that it was impossible for me to accrue and take the holiday by the 5th April, but they're having trouble understanding my problem and are telling me I must lose the days accrued - but that doesn't seem fair!
And so to the latest crisis. Last week we realised we had a problem with the software giving bad info. There was a rogue entry that had appeared and corrupted a load of data. No problems, back-ups are run automatically twice a day. Unfortunately, no-one was running the check-data program first to make sure the data being backed up was good.
And so, we had to go back a week to find a good back up. They could recover some of the data but other needed re-inputting, and of course the data that couldn't be done automatically made up 60% of the lost data. So last week was spent re-doing the work from the week before. The General Manager was on holiday so I found myself making the decision as to what options we chose. Needless to say I now do daily data checks before the backup is run, just so I don't end up having to repeat weeks. One major difference this time - previously I would have spent the long holiday weekend working to get everything up to date. This long holiday weekend has been 4 days off for me. There is still work to do but it will get done on Tuesday.
Hopefully this week will see my new colleague starting, the system fully up to date and the job will revert back to being stress-free.

Too Good to be True?
After the disappointment of Friday's 'no-job' news, I spent the weekend trawling through the internet job sites checking for suitable positions and had my list of contacts all ready for Monday morning.
On Monday morning, the phone rang before I had sat down to start working through my list and it was an agency I haven't heard from for 4 months. They had a position nearby, needed an immediate start, doing what I do - was I interested?
Ermmmmm, let me think about it - YES.
So, I had an interview yesterday morning. Again, a 12 weeks temp contract with a possible permanent afterwards. Yeah, we won't be too focused on that. They were seeing 2 of us, 50/50 chance then.
Afterwards I decided to enjoy my day off and take the dogs to Sherwood Forest for a stroll. While I was there my phone rang. It was the agency with good news.
They were offering me a position 4 days a week - so, I still have my 3 day weekends - and want me to start tomorrow.
Further discussion and it turns out they couldn't decide between the 2 of us, so we have both been set on. One will do Mon - Thurs and the other Tues - Fri, I'll find out tomorrow which days I'll work but I'm happy with either. This gives them 5 days cover, holiday cover, illness and they feel there is enough work for 2 as they are coming in to their busy time of year.
They were let down by a previous temp who was taken on the week before for training and then this week didn't go back as she received another job offer that she preferred, so I think there is a bit of hedging their bets with us. They can try us both out to see who they prefer, and if one drops them in it the other can continue - maybe my experiences of the previous week have made me a little cynical - only time will tell.
But, in the meantime I have a job round the corner in nice, modern offices opposite the supermarket and McDonalds. I no longer have a 80 miles round trip each day which more than makes up for the lower hourly rate, especially with fuel prices going up all the time.
So, tomorrow morning sees me playing the role of new girl again - but this time, I'm not alone.

Be Careful What You Wish For - You May Just Get It!
I wrote recently about how much I enjoy my 3 day weekends and that I hoped I wouldn't be asked to work Friday's for a few more weeks.
What I hadn't anticipated was that not only would they not be asking me to work Fridays in the near future, suddenly I wasn't needed to work Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays either.
Yes, on Friday I had a call from the agency to say the company I was working at had had a meeting that morning and decided they needed some cost reductions and that I was a 'luxury that they couldn't afford!'
I've basically been too effective and too efficient in sorting out their issues and now they can continue to tick over as they were, without me. They had concerns over how their customer accounts were being collected. They didn't know how to use the software to it's full extent and didn't have any User Guides to help them! They had an idea what it should do but didn't know how to make it do it.
They now have a full set of user Guides, a new written procedure and a set of reports that gives them the information they need to control things better.
And I have a week off while I look for a new assignment.
I must admit it's left me feeling gobsmacked and bewildered, and a little disappointed that they didn't sit down and talk to me about it rather than waiting until I was on my day off and then ringing the agency.
Quite bizarre!

A Good Day at the Office
No-one has 2 heads.
I have a desk, a phone, a computer and people who make me coffee.
I have had my H&S and HR 'chat' and been issued with my high-vis jacket, incase I fancy a walk.
My first journey there in commuter traffic was a nightmare so, theoretically, can only get better - I think it was cold, Monday morning syndrome. Ironic seeing as the tv had been saying yesterday was supposed to be 'Happy Monday!'
I'm going back for day 2!
Overall, a good day at the office.

That 'New Girl in the Office' feeling.
OK. We are sitting as normal on a Sunday night, watching 'Top Gear' and once again, I have the 'new girl' butterflies as I start my new job tomorrow. There's the usual what will I be doing, what will the others be like and how will I find my way around the place, which seemed like a complete maze when I went for my interview.
The company supply a huge variety of stuff to garden centres from the bags of decorative pebbles to paving stones, from garden fountains to garden gnomes and is sited on a disused airfield. The disused hangers are an ideal place for the stuff to be housed and I'm sure it won't take too long to find my way around, but I don't have the best sense of direction so I may be in for some fun times in the early days.
It will be an interesting day tomorrow but I'm up for the challenge.

It's official - I am employed again!
I got the phone call today to confirm my start date. The details have been sorted, and I start in a weeks time.
I leave my current place tomorrow and I will miss it, even though it was always just a temporary assignment. After not working for 2½ years it has been really good to have such a good assignment to build my confidence again. Now I'm ready for a real challenge - and that's what my new role will be.
And so, I have a week off and then I'm back into the fray!

Job Hunting
Those of you who read this regularly will know I have been job hunting, since August, but being on a temporary assignment that kept getting extended tended to make me a little lazy. So, although I have been trawling through the emails from Monster Jobs and Total Jobs everyday and sending off my CV, I only started some serious searching at Christmas, knowing that this assignment finished this Friday.
Since being back I have realised that job hunting has changed a lot over the last 10 years and is now very internet driven via agencies. Job listings in papers are very limited and so, the biggest barrier to getting back to work is getting past the agencies as few companies advertise direct.
Just sending in your CV gets you no where. They get thousands every day and unless yours stands out for all the right reasons, it gets lost in the masses. Most agencies even state that they will not acknowledge your application and if you don't hear from them you've not been successful. Getting feedback as to why you haven't been successful merely extracts a response of 'there were others who met the criteria more closely!' - really helpful!
Registering with them doesn't seem to help in a lot of cases either, they seem really pleased to have you on board - for a couple of weeks - and then when they can't find anything for you they seem to lose interest and move on to the new applicants.
And finally, unless you 'gel' with one of the recruiters and they 'get' you - it seems you are just wasting your time.
I am lucky, in that I have an agency where I have someone who seems to 'get' me. I spoke with them last week and they were on the look out for a placement for me but they had nothing yet. Then, late on Friday I got a call +to say there was a permanent vacancy they felt I was perfect for. After a brief chat I agreed they could send my details through to the company and within the hour I was scheduled for an interview at 9am this morning.
And so, I met with them this morning and had a good interview. For a variety of reasons it suits us both to work on a 3 month contract with a view to a permanent contract if it works for both of us.
And so, it looks like I'll be starting at the beginning of February if the finer details of the contract can be agreed.

What a long week.
I can only put it down to the long break over Christmas and a 4 day week last week, but oh, has this week seemed a long week at work.
Whether next week will seem as long remains to be seen, but it may be, as it's my last week with the company - finally we have reached a date when my assignment is not being extended. I have completed my tasks and have no more work to do there.
And so, after a weeks break I will hopefully be starting a new assignment at the beginning of February. I have 4 or 5 possibles - mainly long term contracts covering maternity leave, but there is a permanent role in the mix. I am going to have a chat (I don't do interviews anymore) next week and see whether I like them and they like me.
It's going to be a commute of 45 minutes which will be such a change from my daily drive at the moment where the car heater hasn't even started to push warm air into the car before I'm in the car park but at least, if I do have a longer drive I will be able to listen to my CD's more than a track per trip. It took me a week to listen to my new (10 track) Take That CD!

Last Working Day before Christmas
In a few hours I will be defrosting my car for the 5 minute drive to work for the last time before Christmas.
I had been expecting to work tomorrow too, but it seems the 3 people I work for are all finishing tonight for the holidays, so they suggested there would be no reason for me to work tomorrow either. Today will be my last day until the 4th January!
So, my Christmas holidays are starting a little earlier than planned. It gives me a few extra hours to chill out (and in -8c temperatures, there is little else we can do!) and open the mince pies early.
I have now had my contract extended until the 21st January, so I'm not into panic mode to find a new assignment just yet. That can wait until the New Year. I can't believe I've been there almost 6 months. When I signed on to do Temporary Contracts I thought I would be moving about from Company to Company covering holidays and illness, but this was my first assignment and I'm still there.
I do know that this year has seemed particularly bad for temping work. The agencies have been telling me that they've stuggled to keep their long term temps in back to back contracts for the first time in many years, so I do consider myself to be fortunate to have landed one that's been extended so much, but I do quite fancy a change now - just because I had been quite looking forward to new challenges. After being in my last job for 22 years, I did sometimes wonder what else was out there and thought temping would be a way of finding out - maybe the New Year will bring some variety.

I had been expecting to work tomorrow too, but it seems the 3 people I work for are all finishing tonight for the holidays, so they suggested there would be no reason for me to work tomorrow either. Today will be my last day until the 4th January!
So, my Christmas holidays are starting a little earlier than planned. It gives me a few extra hours to chill out (and in -8c temperatures, there is little else we can do!) and open the mince pies early.
I have now had my contract extended until the 21st January, so I'm not into panic mode to find a new assignment just yet. That can wait until the New Year. I can't believe I've been there almost 6 months. When I signed on to do Temporary Contracts I thought I would be moving about from Company to Company covering holidays and illness, but this was my first assignment and I'm still there.
I do know that this year has seemed particularly bad for temping work. The agencies have been telling me that they've stuggled to keep their long term temps in back to back contracts for the first time in many years, so I do consider myself to be fortunate to have landed one that's been extended so much, but I do quite fancy a change now - just because I had been quite looking forward to new challenges. After being in my last job for 22 years, I did sometimes wonder what else was out there and thought temping would be a way of finding out - maybe the New Year will bring some variety.
